Weekly Beauty Tip #11: Tinted lip balms

Weekly Beauty Tip #11: Tinted lip balms

If you want some color on your lips, but you don't like to wear lipstick, lip stains or lip gloss try a tinted lip balm. It is as the name implies: a lip balm with some color to it. Tinted lip balms are great when pressed for time or when you don't feel like wearing a lot of makeup.

Some good tinted lip balms I would recommend are:

Maybelline Baby Lips

This is a great lip balm with the added bonus of coming in different tints. There are 6 of these in all including  2 clear ones (one of the clear ones has a peppermint feel and smell to it), a pink one, a nude one, a red one, and a deep purple one. I personally use the peppermint one alone and under all of my lip products. Added bonus: it has an SPF of 20.

E.L.F Studio Lip Balm SPF 15

Another great tinted lip balm with a good rang of colors. It is also a very cheap affordable price so that you could buy every shade if you wanted to.

E.L.F Mineral Moisturizing Lip Tint SPF 8

If you like wearing mineral makeup, this might be the tinted lip balm for you. It is 100% mineral based with no parabens, chemical dyes, or preservatives. It has shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil and vitamin e to help moisturize and keep your lips healthy. This is also another very affordable balm.

Nyx Color Lip Balm

Another great tinted lip balm in what I consider a really great range in colors.

Please pardon the out of stock printed across this picture. At the time that I am writing this post, all of these are out of stock on E.L.F's website. They do re-stock their website often and usually pretty fast so don't fret if you plan to purchase these.

This is my all time favorite tinted lip balm. Although it does not come in a wide range of colors, the colors sold are great. This is a very buildable lip balm. This is a rather thick balm, unlike most tinted lip balms which are very light. You do have the option of putting a very light layer on to make it more sheer or to build it up to make it as opaque as lipstick. You get a very good amount of product for the price, but E.L.F should work on the packaging. The packaging is way too bulky. I personally own 2 of these, in Peaceful Pink and Romantic Rouge. Peaceful Pink is a beautiful pink color that you can wear every day and Romantic Rouge is a gorgeous red that can be worn multiple ways. I like to use Romantic Rouge underneath my red lipsticks. These are as cheap as the other E.L.F products that I have featured here, so it is very affordable to own every color.

A tip for using this lip balm: Use a brush to apply it, do not apply it with your fingers! You wouldn't apply your eyeshadow with your fingers, would you? Applying product with your fingers can be very messy not to mention unsanitary.

My own swatches:

                                                       Romantic Rouge:

The lighting at my house is terrible and the flash didn't make it any better. This is actually a nice bright (not too bright) red. On the left, it is put on very lightly and sheer. On the right, the product is built up.

Peaceful Pink

For some reason, this color was hard for me to capture on camera. Each time I tried to get it without the flash, it came out looking very corally. It does look a little brighter in these pictures with the flash than it does in real life. On the left is the product applied lightly and on the right is the product built up.

An extra note I would like to add to this. Keep in mind that the swatches I have shown are to give you an idea of what the colors might look like. Online swatches like the screen captures I took are hardly ever accurate. For those of you who do not know what a swatch is, it is a sample of the color. Swatches are also used for paint, the little pieces of paper representing the color at hardware stores are called swatches.

I never go by swatches that a company puts out of their cosmetics. There is a way around this. Any one who knows me personally knows that any time I plan to buy a product online I fiercely search for product reviews and swatches online before I buy it. People are always posting swatches of products on their websites and blogs. It is very easy to find out what a product really looks like. A word of advice though: look at atleast 3 swatches of the same product. Never stick with one. Many products look different in different lighting or on people's skin. Think of it this way: if you were/are in school, you would never submit a paper without proof reading it first.

I posted my swatches of Romantic Rouge to prove this point. Look how different this looks in both types of lighting.

I'm going to end this post on something not makeup related, but I thought my readers would enjoy. Meet my new kitten, Autumn. She was watching me take the pictures for this blog post, and I couldn't resist snapping one of her. I have only had her since sunday afternoon. She is so tiny and she is probably the cutest little thing I have ever seen. And yes, that is my train case in the background.
